For fishing, the area
of the Gallatin River near The Trout Club is the most scenic and productive. Rainbow trout
are the predominant species, ranging in size from 8 to 24 inches. Brown trout range up to
five pounds. The Gallatin Canyon is relatively narrow, forested with lodgepole pine and
Douglas fir. The conifer forest often reaches to the stream bank, providing a pleasant
atmosphere in which to fish.

Chad told me not to show the big ones I caught
because he didn't want everyone and his brother crowding us out from the best holes.
You can reach Chad at Greater Yellowstone FlyFishers (below). |

He swore me to secrecy on this big brown, so please don't tell
anyone that we actually were on the Yellowstone River in these two photos, and not the
Gallatin where the fish are so big the Forest Service refuses to allow us to photograph
them.

All the river scenes
in "A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT" were filmed three miles upstream from The Trout
Club. Our half mile river frontage on the Gallatin River looks just like the film, and the
fishing is as good.
Many cold mountain
streams feed the river in the Gallatin Canyon, adding to its allure. Big game animals such
as elk, deer, moose and bighorn sheep use the immediate area. During certain times of the
year they are visible to the angler.
